Taking a road trip through Florida is one of the best ways to experience the Sunshine State. Since so many of the state’s major destinations are within a quick drive of each other, you’ll be able to see several incredible cities all in just one day! One of the best Florida road trips to consider is a drive from Anna Maria Island to Sarasota. 

Traveling to Sarasota

When you want to get from Anna Maria Island to Sarasota, there are several options for getting there. Suppose you have to fly into the area for your vacation. In that case, chances are that you’ll fly right into Sarasota anyway since the convenient Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport is the closest major airport to AMI. You can either rent a car at this point or hire a car service to get you to Anna Maria Island.

However, when you’re coming into Sarasota for fun, you’re going to want to head to downtown Sarasota, which doesn’t take you down the same route as traveling to and from the airport. 

How Far Away is Sarasota from Anna Maria Island?

To get from Anna Maria Island to Sarasota, the journey is only about 21 miles, which typically takes about 40 minutes to drive. You can make it to Sarasota early in the morning, grab a delicious breakfast, spend the whole day exploring the sites, and still make it back home to Anna Maria Island by dinner!

Starting in Anna Maria Island, you’ll want to make your way east on 50th Street toward 2nd Avenue. You’ll then make your way onto FL-64 E/Manatee Avenue and stay on this road for 4.6 miles. Turn right onto 75th Street W and continue for 3.3 miles. At the traffic circle, take the first exit onto El Conquistador Parkway. You’ll come to another traffic circle after 1.8 miles, where you’ll want to take the second exit to stay on El Conquistador Parkway for another 1.4 miles.

Continue onto Bayshore Gardens Parkway for 1.3 miles before turning right onto US-41 S. Stay on this road for 5.9 miles, then at the traffic circle, take the second exit onto N Tamiami Trail. You’ll reach yet another traffic circle in 0.4 miles, where you’ll take the third exit onto 10th Street. Then, just turn right onto N Washington Boulevard and left onto Main Street in Sarasota!

Things to Do in Sarasota

Now that you’ve made it to Sarasota, you’re going to want to check out all the best things to do in town. There’s a little something for everyone here, from nature sites and historical museums to beaches, family activities, tours, and more. This list is just the beginning of some of the most exciting things to do in Sarasota!

To get up close and personal with some of the most fascinating wildlife, make your way to Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary. (Note that this is not the Big Cat Rescue associated with Carole Baskin of Tiger King; that facility is located in Tampa.) Big Cat Habitat was founded in 1987 by Kay Rosaire and her family and has faithfully served the area. Here, you’ll find more than 150 incredible species of both domestic and exotic animals. You can observe from afar or get up close and personal with their awesome animal encounters! Big Cat Habitat is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12 noon to 4 p.m.

Sarasota is also home to The Ringling, a vast estate home of circus legend John Ringling and his wife, Mable. While there are several different portions of this establishment, the Museum of Art is one piece you certainly don’t want to miss! The gallery first opened in 1930 and has since housed 21 stunning artwork galleries from Ringling’s permanent collection. Several galleries are currently being restored, but there is still plenty to see for a fun afternoon excursion.

What would a vacation to Sarasota be like without spending some time at the beach? Discover AMI History

At the Anna Maria Island Historical Society Museum, you can learn all about the incredible story of the island. You’ll start by learning about the Native American peoples who lived in the area and used AMI as a fishing camp until the Spanish arrived. Then, you’ll get to know George Emerson Beach, who was the first permanent resident of Anna Maria Island and lived on the shorelines of what is today known as Bean Point Beach. You’ll see photos and artifacts that illustrate life on the island in its early days.

As you walk through the museum, you’ll actually be getting more history than you realize simply because of the building you’re in! The building that houses the Anna Maria Island Historical Society Museum used to function as an icehouse back in the 1920s! After its icehouse days, the building was used as an automobile garage, a sea turtle hatchery, and even a public administration building. It’s been the home of the Historical Society Museum since 1992. 

But the main Museum building isn’t the only attraction on the grounds. Visitors can also explore the Anna Maria City Jail, which is one of the main tourist attractions on the island (and is a great place for a photo op!). The jail was built in 1927 and was used until a fire claimed it in the 1940s. The property also holds Belle Haven, a historic cottage that was built in 1920 and actually fell into the bay just 6 years later. It was retrieved from the waters and served as a family home for around 50 years. Today, it houses heirlooms and antiques that early island residents would have used.

Hobby Airport serving Houston, Texas. Sarasota-Bradenton will now be the 10^th airport in the state of Florida to receive service from Southwest.

Once you’re there, you’ll need to look out for an entrance. There are a few options for getting onto the beach; just look for the white signs noting where the beach access points are located. The “main” entrance is at a small crossroads where North Bay Boulevard and North Shore Drive meet. Entrances can also be found at the intersection of Fern Street and North Shore Drive, as well as the intersection of Gladiolus Street and North Shore Drive.

Many of the paths along the island are multi-use, so you’ll likely see walkers along the path instead of only bikers. The Pine Avenue path is a good option as well, and it’s only going to get better thanks to the ongoing renovations. State Park and Nature Preserves

If you’re wanting to take a bike ride through nature, head 15 minutes away from Anna Maria Island to get to Robinson Preserve in mainland Bradenton (not to be confused with Bradenton Beach on the island). This 487-acre preserve has a 7.5-mile trail for walking and biking. You’ll be taken through the most beautiful sections of the preserve, putting you face-to-face with the wildlife and bird species within the preserve. 

Another option to bike in Bradenton is Lake Manatee State Park. This destination lies just outside of the city and maintains 6.5 miles of trail for you to experience. On your bike ride, you’ll go through several different types of ecosystems like sand pine scrubs and flatwoods. You’ll also get to see wildlife species like foxes, bobcats, and eagles!

At Neal Preserve, you get stunning nature mixed in with fascinating history. Perico Preserve

Perico Preserve is the first of its kind to be completely conceptualized as a bird sanctuary. Things start to cool off during the fall in Anna Maria Island. During September, October, and November, average high temperatures tend to stay in the 70s. You may experience slightly cooler weather in the mornings and evenings, but the daytime is still great for walking around and experiencing the island’s outdoor activities. As far as rain, September is still quite wet, but conditions dry out when October hits.

Finally, winter in Anna Maria Island is the coldest season, but temperatures still don’t get nearly as low as they do in other areas of the country. Throughout December, January, and February, you’re likely to experience high temperatures in the 60s or low 70s. You’ll definitely need to be prepared for chilly evenings! The winter is the dry season, so at least you can rest assured that you won’t have to deal with rain on top of the colder weather.

What to Pack

No matter what time of year you plan to visit Anna Maria Island, you’ll always want to bring some short-sleeved shirts and shorts.
